The work of the Recyclerie Sportive in Isère
junio 2026
Agence pour l’Environnement et la Maîtrise de l’Energie (ADEME)
The nonprofit organization La Recyclerie Sportive has launched “ 3S ,” a series of 20 mobile workshops across the Grenoble metropolitan area. In response to air quality challenges, this project—supported by ADEME (€5,022)—has trained 125 residents and students in bicycle mechanics to help them become more self-reliant. By overcoming the psychological barrier caused by a lack of technical knowledge, this initiative promotes sustainable mobility in everyday life and helps reduce pollutant emissions.

Why Take Action ?
Making Cycling More Accessible for Cleaner Air
Based in Grenoble since 2022, the national association “ La Recyclerie Sportive ” works to make sports more eco-friendly. To amplify its impact, it launched “ Cycling Outreach and Awareness ,” a project featuring mobile workshops deployed throughout the metropolitan area. The goal is to reach out directly to commuters, students, and vulnerable populations to share knowledge about bicycle mechanics and encourage sustainable transportation.
Taking Action for the City’s Air Quality: Removing Barriers to Cycling
Located within an Air Quality Protection Plan (PPA) zone, the Grenoble metropolitan area faces significant challenges in improving its air quality. To address these challenges and reduce emissions of pollutants (such as nitrogen dioxide) linked to motor vehicle traffic, the development of sustainable mobility is a key strategy. However, a lack of knowledge about bicycle maintenance often acts as a psychological barrier that discourages residents from using bicycles. By teaching basic mechanical skills, the Recyclerie Sportive empowers citizens to become more self-reliant, making cycling a sustainable and stress-free everyday option.
Targeted Funding from ADEME
To support this behavioral change, the ADEME Regional Directorate provided €5,022 in funding for the project to finance educational workshops raising awareness about sustainable mobility, designating the association as the recipient of its specific grant program aimed at improving air quality in PPA areas.
Implementation
Methodological Overview: Reaching Out to Target Audiences
The association primarily targeted students and residents of priority neighborhoods by taking its resources directly to apartment buildings or campuses (notably at the University of Grenoble Alpes). These sessions took two forms:
-
Educational workshops using a specific tool (the “soft mobility timeline” created with the French Cycling Federation) to raise awareness about environmental issues and air pollution.
-
Co-repair workshops to demystify mechanics, teach specific repair techniques, and build confidence among beginners.
Timeline
The initiative was carried out and completed over the course of a full year, from September 2023 to September 2024.
Technical Details : Bringing Dormant Bikes Back to Life
Thanks to this outreach approach, the team was able to restore bikes that had been stored and neglected in residents’ basements or yards, thereby directly contributing to reuse.
Key Figures : A Transition in Action
The initiative proved its value. During these workshops, 125 participants were reached, including 99 adults and 25 children. After overcoming their apprehension about mechanics during these mobile workshops, many participants subsequently came on their own to the regular drop-in sessions at the Recyclerie Sportive to continue learning and maintaining their bikes.
Focus
This experience highlighted a key fact: the main obstacle to cycling very often lies in a lack of technical knowledge. Participants overwhelmingly stated that their lack of know-how acted as a real barrier to their cycling. The enthusiasm was such that even students with access to a fleet of rental bikes (the SMMAG’s Métrovélos, for which repairs are included) came to attend the workshops for the sole purpose of learning to repair their bikes themselves, demonstrating the importance of this need for self-reliance.
Factors for Reproducibility
This initiative can be replicated in any region. It is all the more relevant given that the new European 2030 Directive will halve the permitted pollutant emission thresholds, forcing every local government to accelerate behavioral change regarding mobility. To succeed, it is essential to rely on the local network of organizations. The main challenge to anticipate is the allocation of human resources: since cycling is highly weather-dependent, it is necessary to plan for larger teams to handle peak repair demand in the fall and spring.
| “The workshops at La Recyclerie Sportive have helped students take the plunge into everyday cycling. Some then went on to buy a used bike, without worrying about not knowing how to repair it if problems arose.” Yoann FILY, Project Manager, EVE (UGA Student Life Center) |
